Tech World was created in April 2016:

Tech World is a collaboration of various local stakeholders responding to the White House’s bold multi-sector initiative and call to action to up-skill Americans and to rapidly train workers for a well-paying tech job, often in just a few months. This extends the current efforts of Mayor Baraka’s Office to empower Newarkers and meet the talent needs of local businesses. Employers across the United States are in critical need of talent with these skills.

Located at 400 Hawthorne Ave in Newark, Tech World is a transformational institution for the area.  Free for students, Tech World teaches courses in web design, graphic design, digital literacy, networking, and more.  In conjunction with local universities and nonprofits, the Tech Academy serves as a high tech locus for the city.

Additional training; web design, graphic design, digital literacy, networking, coding, S.T.E.M., S.T.E.A.M. Computer Science and more. In conjunction with the IEEE, Girls Who Code, Google’ Computer Science for all from grades 4-12, New Jersey State Troopers, New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission, and IT programs from Newark’s institutions of higher learning and other partners, NAN Newark Tech World serves as a high tech locus for the City. Tech Worlds 10gb of high speed internet, makes NAN Newark Tech World stand out as the highest internet facility in the north east of the U.S.A.
Along with the prohibitive costs of internet and computers at home, and the smartphone generation barely out of puberty, a ton of potential tech industry talent has spent the majority of their lives languishing outside the world of technology. To fill the talent pool, we need to extend the pipeline deeper into low-opportunity communities where tech access compares to indoor plumbing in the mid-1800s. NAN Newark Tech World serves as a technology pipeline-hub for industries to hire well trained Newark residents for tech sector jobs.
Living in an increasingly digital world means broader access to almost all of life’s needs. Everything from shopping, banking, paying bills, studying, and applying for a job can all be done electronically. While the ease of access seems like a good enough reason to buy in to broadband, we know there are still many in minority and low-income communities who have not become adopters of technology and all that it has to offer. The resistance to use the internet in any form to solve many of life’s problems or create an easier lifestyle also creates barriers for the vast entrepreneurial opportunities that exist in the technology industry. The future of jobs will lie heavily in this field and with a projected shortage of prepared workers, we know that many of the people who are not yet using broadband or using it in a limited capacity will be left out of the many opportunities that will exist. NAN Newark Tech Worlds vision is to engage local leaders, elected official and communities to close the IT skills gap in Newark and bring access and opportunity to communities who are being left behind in the technology revolution.
To help ameliorate this untenable condition that can have a devastating economic impact in terms of Newark residents having their rightful opportunities to secure high paying IT jobs, residents there is established in the Department of Labor a pilot program funded for the next 10 years to support NAN Newark Tech World’s “high valued technology skill training into the heart of Newark’s low-income communities that have the greatest potential and need for IT training. The goal of the pilot program shall be to eliminate disparities among Newark’s residents specifically in securing IT jobs that is in high demand by industry.
